TAKE OFFLINE ANALYSIS MONITORING AND TESTING ONLINE USING INLINE OPTICAL FLOW CELLS.

Kemtrak optical flow cells provide a physical window to the flowing process—connect absorbance, transmission, scatter or fluorescence instrumentation to enable real time monitoring of clarity, color, concentration, turbidity or contamination.

DISCUSS SOLUTIONS WITH OUR EXPERTS

Using standard SMA905 fiber optic connectors, Kemtrak inline optical measurement cells facilitate the connection of real time monitoring in flowing processes, replacing intermittent offline sample testing with continuous measurement using optical techniques – transmission, absorbance, scatter and fluorescence – in all areas of business: research and development, pilot scale and production. Real time monitoring means data can be collected and viewed in real time during processing, allowing for deviations from norms to be observed and end points to be determined. Equipment failures can be detected immediately and actions initiated for rapid resolution – something not possible with sample testing offline. By changing from offline sample testing to online continuous monitoring, product quality and yield can be increased, potential hazards to personnel mitigated, wastage and rework reduced, plant throughput increased and overall efficiency increased. As a result, real savings can be realized through reduced costs and overheads.

In a laboratory setting, oftentimes research and testing are carried out with small quantities of material. Sampling and testing reduce the amount of material available for experimentation. Using inline analysis in place of benchtop instruments removes the need to take samples. Not all benchtop measurements can be moved to real time monitoring (i.e., Karl Fischer Titration), but where optical absorbance or transmission measurements, either scanned or at a discrete wavelength are used, this is very possible. In some cases, existing laboratory instrumentation can be connected directly to an inline flow cell, in others a separate instrument may be needed. Using inline optical flow cells can greatly improve measurement repeatability as errors through sample technique are removed.

Flow-Cell Showcase

For industrial installations, cells are available with flanges or threaded connections that accept most standard pipe and tube fitting types. Smaller diameter cells up to 3” in diameter are supplied in a wafer style, while larger cells are a spool piece type. A range of different materials is also available depending upon process requirements. Optical connection is with fiber optic cables using SMA905 connections. Having no electrical or electronic components on board, Kemtrak cells can be readily installed in hazardous areas. Cells up to 600# pressure rating and 8” diameter are available.

Inline Optical Flow Cells FAQs

Sanitary Cells

We must have full material documentation with everything we put in the plant. Can you provide that? Expand

Absolutely – all of our optical flow cells come with a complete set of material certificates

Can the Triclamp® cells be sterilized in place (SIP)? Expand

Not a problem. Triclamp cells are rated to 150°C as standard. Higher temperature versions are available.

Disposable/Single Use Cells

What is the dead space volume in these cells? Expand

There is none – the through bore of the cell is parallel – no widening in the middle to accommodate the windows. Full internal volume details are available on the data sheet

Is the cell material sterilizable? Expand

Our disposable cells can be sterilized through autoclaving or irradiation. In general, target steam temperature would be 135 °C (275 °F), target radiation level would be up to 4 Megarads (Mrad) or 40 kiloGrays (kGy)

How do I connect my measurement instrument to the cell after it is sterilized? Expand

Kemtrak disposable cells plug into a “dock” that already has fiber optic connections to your instrument. The cell drops in, ready connected to tubing and locks in place in the optical path. It’s that simple.

Connections

Will my PC based scanning spectrophotometer connect to these cells? Expand

Provided your spectrophotometer is fiber optic based, no problem. Kemtrak cells have standard SMA905 connections to ensure connectivity with just about any fiber optic coupled, light-based instrumentation.

I want to do deep UV absorbance measurements. Will this work with your optical cells? Expand

Kemtrak offer several grades of window material that covers all wavelengths from deep UV to NIR. For deep UV measurement, fused silica windows are recommended as this material exhibits excellent transmission characteristics from 190nm through the NIR.

Industrial Cells

Are these cells suitable for use in a hazardous area? Expand

Absolutely! Kemtrak measurement cells have no electrical or electronic components on board, so can be fitted in a hazardous area without any concerns. The fiber optic cables connecting them to your preferred instrumentation must, however, pass through a seal fitting or isolator as they pass from ordinary area to hazardous area if they are run in an industrialized sheath or covering with an air gap within. Kemtrak can provide suitable cables with seal fittings installed for this purpose if required.

What is a wafer style flange cell? Expand

For installation in lines where standard flanges are used, Kemtrak have wafer style flange cell designs available. These cells are “sandwiched” between two standard flanges and fixed in place using long bolts (or studs) with nuts and washers in the usual way. Several pressure ratings are available.

A wide range of inline flow cells are available with a wide selection of process fitting types/sizes, material types and optical path lengths.
