Using standard SMA905 fiber optic connectors, Kemtrak inline optical measurement cells facilitate the connection of real time monitoring in flowing processes, replacing intermittent offline sample testing with continuous measurement using optical techniques – transmission, absorbance, scatter and fluorescence – in all areas of business: research and development, pilot scale and production. Real time monitoring means data can be collected and viewed in real time during processing, allowing for deviations from norms to be observed and end points to be determined. Equipment failures can be detected immediately and actions initiated for rapid resolution – something not possible with sample testing offline. By changing from offline sample testing to online continuous monitoring, product quality and yield can be increased, potential hazards to personnel mitigated, wastage and rework reduced, plant throughput increased and overall efficiency increased. As a result, real savings can be realized through reduced costs and overheads.
In a laboratory setting, oftentimes research and testing are carried out with small quantities of material. Sampling and testing reduce the amount of material available for experimentation. Using inline analysis in place of benchtop instruments removes the need to take samples. Not all benchtop measurements can be moved to real time monitoring (i.e., Karl Fischer Titration), but where optical absorbance or transmission measurements, either scanned or at a discrete wavelength are used, this is very possible. In some cases, existing laboratory instrumentation can be connected directly to an inline flow cell, in others a separate instrument may be needed. Using inline optical flow cells can greatly improve measurement repeatability as errors through sample technique are removed.
For industrial installations, cells are available with flanges or threaded connections that accept most standard pipe and tube fitting types. Smaller diameter cells up to 3” in diameter are supplied in a wafer style, while larger cells are a spool piece type. A range of different materials is also available depending upon process requirements. Optical connection is with fiber optic cables using SMA905 connections. Having no electrical or electronic components on board, Kemtrak cells can be readily installed in hazardous areas. Cells up to 600# pressure rating and 8” diameter are available.
